In its feature on the so-called “Pelješac wine revolution,” Jutarnji list presents Denis Bogoević-Marušić of Križ Winery, one of the key figures behind GrapeSton – the first festival of natural winemakers and spontaneous wines in Croatia.
Although originally from Split, Denis permanently moved to Prizdrina on Pelješac in 2004, determined to cultivate organically grown grapes and produce wines through spontaneous fermentation. With no formal background in winemaking at the time, he followed a clear vision: wine “as it once was.”
Today, Križ produces between 8,000 and 10,000 bottles annually, exclusively from estate-grown grapes. Alongside Plavac Mali and Grk — which he reintroduced to Pelješac — Denis also cultivates Rukatac and recently planted Trnjak. His wines are known for short macerations, structure, and authenticity, avoiding excessive techniques that mask character. Križ Plavac wines are exported to the United States and appear on Michelin-starred restaurant wine lists.
As Denis simply puts it:
“To know a lot about wine, we must drink a lot of it.”
